A Practice for Spring Equinox: Inversions and Community Connections

March 19, 2017 @ 11:00 am - 1:30 pm

Bubbling Spring, Emerging Hope: A Practice for Spring Equinox

One of my happiest memories of spring was coming upon a black bear (from a safe distnce) near our Alaska cabin.  She was lying spread eagle on her stomach near a spring where the first green shoots of early season growth were poking from the ground.   Clearly ecstatic to be out of hibernation, enjoying the warmth on her fur,  she munched, stretched, rolled and frolicked in a solitary play with her generous mother earth.

As the northern hemisphere turns from darkness to light and cool to warm,  lets tune in and turn our own north pole to the south with a practice of inversions.  Of all of the categories of asana, I have found inversions to have the most immediate effect on my energy level and sense of inner harmony.   They truly bring the vitality of spring into the body, mind and heart.  There are ways for anyone to approach these favorable postures in order to experience the energy and peace they instill.   In this playful and safe practice we will:

  • Discuss the 4 basic inversions,  their many benefits and their contraindications
  • Learn some of the best warm ups and cool downs to practice before and after each pose
  • Learn baby steps and modifications that make each inversion safely accessible to each person’s comfort zone
  • Learn how to incorporate inversions into a home practice to maximize their benefit to YOUR health

Springtime naturally draws us out of the inherent introversion of winter with the strong desire to reacquaint ourselves with our connection to emerging life.   Each day is an opportunity to connect, with ourselves, with our community, with the earth.   We’ll complete our time together with a practice or two that helps us to identify our gifts and talents that we may spring forward in joy and service and deep connection.

“I slept and dreamt that life was joy,  I woke and saw that life was service,  I acted and behold,  Service was Joy”   Rabidranath Tagore
